“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 ESV
Living with Intentionality
As men in the MD5 Discipleship program, we are encouraged to live with intentionality in every area of our lives.
This is especially true as fathers. But how often are we guilty of falling into the trap of being too busy to allow the Lord to establish our steps?
We make intentional plans for most things in life but often ignore what is most important. As a father, the window of time with our children in our homes and under our care is really very short.
Messengers for the Future
Dr. Tim Kimmel shares this statement in one of our videos “Our children and grandchildren are our messengers that we send to a time and place that we will never see.”
Did you catch that? We need to live with intentionality as we raise our children!
They are our messengers for the future.
A Great Question to Ask Yourself
I think a good follow up question for Dr. Kimmel’s statement is; “What will our message be?”
Will our message be something about personal accolades we received, or how well we played a sport?
Will the message be something about power or social influence?
Or, maybe… “Here is a man who allowed the Lord to establish his steps.”
One in Ten
In his book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Donald Whitney poses the
question “How many of your eight great-grandparents do you know the first and last
names?”
His point is that 100 years ago they were as live and active as we are right
now, yet in Whitney’s experience only one in ten can recall as many as three of his or
her great-grandparent’s names.
Despite a lifetime of work and acquiring things, not
even their direct descendants know their names.
Your Future Message
What about you?
Are you allowing the Lord to establish your steps?
Are you leading your family with memorable intentionality?
What will your message be?
